Upcycle – Art and Design

Upcycle. Upcycling. Upcycled.  It’s the new fancy way of saying working with found objects.  If I took an old desk I found on the street and repurposed it for use again, then I would upcycling.  It’s a crafty and creative spin on one of the three “R”s; REUSE!  Artists have been upcycling since before the [...]

Tools

Working hard on many projects these days, both in and outside of my main occupation.  Much to build.
I just realized that all of my power tools are a different brand.  Not that weird I suppose, but it was interesting to notice.
I have a Dewalt cordless drill, Makita palm sander, Ridgid belt sander, Ryobi jigsaw, Bosch [...]

Evan Trine, Photographer?

Perhaps, he’s got the eye, and he know’s when to pull that trigger.  And he’s got some interesting looking friends that make for the right subject matter.  hmmmm….

When scenes like this just happen, and you’re there with your camera to document it, there’s nothing better…

Way to go little brother.

Depression Design

Gary Hustwit, Director of upcoming film, Objectified, has some wise words regarding design and consumption.
“If a designer can come up with a way to make my product with 25% less material, that’s a huge savings if I’m making millions of products. Better design makes that product less expensive to the consumer, more profitable for the [...]

All for the price of $20.  I didn’t buy them, but it was a good find!  What a deal!

Glory Preservation Society

I was driving north on PCH yesterday afternoon, and was struck by the sheer majesty of some awesome looking cloud structures.  I tried to snap a pic on my phone, but it just wasn’t getting the job done.  During my stretch between Huntington Main St and Bolsa Chica, I noticed that the people in the [...]

doodles, doddles, doldrums

Recent chicken scratch in the good old handy dandy sketchbook; a collection of thoughts, musings, and church time doodles…

Verily…

Elijah and the Broom Tree

Just a thought.  Maybe all truths are not self-evident at every given moment to all people at all times.  Partial truths are partially evident in most parts.  If I had a hair comb [...]

Gettin’ Crafty

I had all my tools out last night, working on a sweet project for a group down in Irvine (photos forthcoming), and I decided to do a little jigsaw action on some scrap wood lying around.  I have a huge collection of old wood, usually found in the alley behind my house.  I use the [...]

Recent Acquisitions

Just got these little beauties in the mail yesterday.  I think it marks my first actual Ebay purchase.  A group of vintage broadhead arrows, 13 to be exact.  I think the seller actually put new feathers (fletches) on the arrows as well.

Look how mean looking those arrowheads are!

Also, last week, I picked up a group [...]

Saw Stop, and the hunt for a new table saw

I’m in the market for a table saw right now.  A worthy purchase, to be sure, but which one to buy?

I was talking to a buddy at work, who also happens to be a great resource for rapid brainstorming about building things, and he informed me of this truly wonderful product called the Saw Stop.  [...]

What’s your Greendex?

Interesting new survey via National Geographic.  See where you rank on a global scale.

The higher the score, the better.  I scored a 62, and I’m not exactly sure why, but I’m happy about it.
Take the survey and learn more HERE.

Church Architecture

I’ve always been fascinated by Church architecture.  Well, let me step back…. I’ve always been interested in architecture; the built environment.  It comes up in a lot of my sketches and paintings – houses, churches, boats, and the like…
I think the three main structures I’ve spent the majority of my lifetime in have been homes, [...]

Bow and Arrow Experiments (2)

Little Bro, Evan, is still the number one shot with a bow and arrow.  Improvised archery tournaments abound!
Check this out.  Piercing the can 2 out of 3 shots!

Uncanny Accuracy!!!

And here’s some footage from Kevin’s Bachelor Party of Evan wielding his bow and arrow prowess on helpless little watermelon; or not.

Collecting Images

I keep coming back to these two photos from our trip last year to the Salton Sea.  Mountains, valleys, themes of uncovering and recovering, digging, uprooting, discovering, ascending, descending, etc… are ideas and images that keep coming up in my mind lately.  Thus, these two photos, 1 of Kevin and 1 of Danny, as they [...]

Treasure Hunting (skates)

Probably the best pair of skates I have ever seen at an antique store. Impecable condition, and my size!  Soon to be an acquisition??? Perhaps.  Original wood wheels.  Good for doing mean power slides.  And the toe stopper is unlike any I’ve ever seen.

Painting, Painting

As I mentioned a few days ago, I’ve been painting.   I have these surges of making work through a certain process or media, and then just as soon as I’ve started, I switch it up again.  Lately, I’ve been flooded with ideas about sculptural projects I’d like to work on, but I’ve been manifesting these [...]
