Church Architecture

I’ve always been fascinated by Church architecture.  Well, let me step back…. I’ve always been interested in architecture; the built environment.  It comes up in a lot of my sketches and paintings – houses, churches, boats, and the like…

I think the three main structures I’ve spent the majority of my lifetime in have been homes, churches, and schools.  Thus, the 4 walls with a roof and steeple, commonly referred to (in the West) as a church is of particular interest to me.  Church buildings run the gammut, from brown stucco store front churches with hand painted letters that say Church of God, to the Crystal Cathedral, to repurposed shopping malls in Michigan, to churches being featured on Coolhunter.  But for all the differentiation, the one thing that all churches have is a Cross; that super simple symbol that’s left an indelible mark in cultures eye dating all the way back Constantine.

So, what sparked this trail of thought wanderings today…

Would this be considered Cross Ventilation? I should have checked the other side of the building.  This church is at the end of Friends Ave in Whittier, CA.  I pass it often, when I make runs up to the hardware store, but I never noticed this little feature til today.

  • That’s certainly an interesting detail. I could imagine the interior reminding me somewhat of Tadao Ando’s Church of the Light, with narrow slots of light falling in a cruciform pattern. Great blog.

  • What do you do in Whittier?
    I grew up there.
    I know where it is.

    • I work in Santa Fe Springs, so I’m always cruising into Whittier to either go to Battels Hardware, or King Richards Antiques, etc…
